The Maasai Cricket Warriors visited the School and met with Professor Peter Piot to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention, during a trip to the UK where they have been taking part in the Last Man Stands amateur cricket world championships.

Team captain, Sonyanga Ole Ngais, explained part of the team’s philosophy, using cricket to adapt the ABC HIV prevention technique: Abstinence (in cricket the batters must abstain from hitting the ball in the air otherwise they’ll get caught out); Be careful (the batters must be careful with their shots or runs as they may get themselves of their partners out); Condom (refers to protection; the batters are aiming to protect their wickets so they can stay in as long as possible).

Professor Piot joked: “I don’t know anything about cricket, but luckily I know a lot about AIDS.” Praising the team for their great work promoting HIV awareness he said: “I must congratulate you on what you are doing. Young people in Africa are at particular risk of HIV, especially through unprotected sex.

Ancient Principles of printing - Eco Artist Ahmad Nadalian

Inspired by the ancient principles of printing, Eco-Artist Ahmad Nadalian leaves imprints in the sand by using the rotating cylinder with an ornament.

According to the artist, it combines contemporary art with the secrets of ancient rituals, leaving a lot of prints in the deserts and beaches. In addition, he considers his art a kind of ritual, calling it an offering to the Earth, which then takes the images themselves by tides and winds.

Deadly Lethal Lake Turns Animals Into Stone

There's a deceptively still body of water in Tanzania with a deadly secret—it turns any animal it touches to stone. The rare phenomenon is caused by the chemical makeup of the lake, but the petrified creatures it leaves behind are straight out of a horror film.

ACCORDING to Dante, the Styx is not just a river but a vast, deathly swamp filling the entire fifth circle of hell. Perhaps the staff of New Scientist will see it when our time comes but, until then, Lake Natron in northern Tanzania does a pretty good job of illustrating Dante's vision.

Palestinians turn empty gas grenade shells left by Israeli army into flower vases

BILIN, West Bank (AP) — Residents of this Palestinian village have planted flowers in hundreds of spent Israeli tear gas grenades to honor those killed during their weekly protests against Israel's West Bank separation barrier.

Mohammed Khatib, a village organizer, said Wednesday that the unusual garden is meant to show that life can spring from death.

Bilin has become a symbol of Palestinian protests against Israeli policies in the West Bank. The village's struggle to regain land taken by the barrier was the subject of "Five Broken Cameras," a documentary nominated for an Oscar last year.

Residents of this Palestinian village have planted flowers in hundreds of spent Israeli tear gas grenades to honor those killed during their weekly protests against Israel's West Bank separation barrier.

Palestinians say the barrier, which cuts into the West Bank, amounts to a land grab. Israel says it's needed to keep Palestinian attackers out.

The Bilin garden commemorates Bassem Abu Rahmeh, a protest leader who was killed in 2009 when a tear gas grenade struck him in the chest during a demonstration. Bassem's sister, Jawaher, died nearly two years later, a day after a weekly protest during which villagers said she inhaled Israeli tear gas.

Abandoned Olympic Venues Of 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing

With the current debate in Brazil about how much hosting the Olympics helps the local economy despite the enormous construction costs, we thought we would look at how another country has utilized their Olympic structures. China hosted the summer games in Beijing in 2008. Surely they put all those fields and stadiums to good use, right? Well, if the plan was to create the biggest permanent set for a post-apocalyptic movie, then they were right on target! Someone call Kurt Russell, we’re going to need him to dust off his Snake Plissken eyepatch for Escape From Beijing.

The ad agency M&C SAATCHI created the distinct impression that a submarine had accidentally surfaced through a street in Milan, Italy. The sudden and destructive appearance of L1F3 was a promotion for Europ Assistance IT, an insurance company. The lesson appears to be that you need extra insurance just in case this happens on your street.

Teufelsberg - Abandoned Cold War Listening Station Built on an Artificial Hill

A remnant of the Cold War, Teufelsberg Listening Station stands deserted, abandoned to the ravages of time and vandals. Dominating Brandenburg Plain, in the northern section of Berlin’s Grunewald Forest, the permanent station at Teufelsberg was constructed in 1963. Yet perhaps the most surprising fact is that the hill itself is less than twenty years older than the listening station that sits atop it.
